Gordon Davies
Gordon joined Fulham in March 1978 for £5000 from Merthyr Tydfil where he had been a regular on the score sheet, and had been working as a teacher of Physical Education. He immediately became a favourite with the Fulham fans for his never say die attitude and obvious eye for goal. He scored the winner on his debut at Blackpool and became a fixture in the team for the next 7 seasons topping the scoring charts with 20 or more goals on 5 occasions.
His goal scoring exploits were soon noted by the then Welsh Manager Mike Smith who called Gordon up for the first of his 18 Welsh Caps against Turkey in Izmir, in the European Championship Qualifiers. Although not repeating his league scoring touch he did score 2 goals for his country, notably the winner against Northern Ireland in a 1-0 victory.
He spent 2 seasons away from the Cottage, the first at Chelsea who paid £90,000 in Oct 1984 for his services and he subsequently scored a hat trick at Everton in a 4-3 win, one of only two games the Champions lost at home all season. The second season was spent at Man City whom he joined in Oct 1985 for £100,000 where he again showed his goal-scoring prowess by leading the scoring charts at the end of the season with 15 goals.
Gordon however returned to Craven Cottage in Oct 1986 to overtake both Bedford Jezzards and Johnny Haynes goal scoring records. Ivor as he is known affectionately to all at Fulham is now the clubs all time leading goal scorer with 178 league and cup goals. He bowed out of Craven Cottage in 1991 with a testimonial game against a full Welsh XI after spending nearly 12 seasons with the club. He had a brief spell with Wrexham and played and had a hand in both goals in the shock 2-1 FA Cup win over Arsenal before managing a 2nd Division team in Norway. Gordon finally hung up his boots after playing for Northwich Victoria in the Conference in 1993.
He now runs his own Pest Control Company in the Midlands along with combining corporate hospitality work on match days at all Fulham's home games.
