Dave Watson
Dave started his career at Liverpool FC, playing 12 reserves games for them, until he was signed for Norwich City FC by Ken Brown as an 18 year old in 1980. The initial fee was £50,000 which increased by £50,000 after 50 senior games and rose by another £100,000 when he made his full England debut.
At Norwich he soon became a 1st team regular and was captain by the time he was 21. As captain he won the 2nd Division Championship and the Milk Cup in 1985. In all he played over 250 games for Norwich. It was during his spell at Norwich he won his first International Honours, firstly at U21 level culminating in his captaining the side to victory in the UEFA U21 European Championship. Full international honours followed, Dave made his debut for England in their famous 2 – 0 victory over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium when John Barnes scored that memorable goal. In total he gained 12 full international caps.
In August 1986 he was signed by Howard Kendall for Everton for a fee of £900,000. During his first season Everton won the old First Division Championship. He soon forged a good partnership in defence with Kevin Ratcliffe and eventually took over from him as captain during the 1990/91 season. Dave was captain when Everton won the FA Cup in 1995 against Manchester United and for a 7 week spell in 1996 became Caretaker Player/Manager. During his time at Everton he played nearly 600 games eventually becoming player/coach in 1997, finally hanging up his boots aged 39. During his last season at Everton he was 1st team coach working closely with Walter Smith and Archie Knox.
Dave also spent a year as manager of Tranmere Rovers.
