Alan Birchenall

Alan, more commonly referred to as 'The Birch' enjoys an association with Leicester City spanning 30-odd years. Originally a player with over 160 LCFC Division One appearances to his name, he has been the front-man of the Club in a variety of public relations roles throughout the past three decades. As a player Alan clocked up over 400 appearances with Sheffield United, Chelsea, Leicester, Notts County, Blackburn, Luton and Hereford. He is perhaps most fondly remembered for his six years as a striker-turned-midfielder in the halcyon days of the ‘Bloomfield Boys’. Alan starred alongside England internationals Frank Worthington, Keith Weller, Peter Shilton and Steve Whitworth under the inspired managership of Jimmy Bloomfield.

A native of East London, Alan made his family home in the county of Leicestershire and became the club’s public relations officer 25 years ago. During that time he has established an excellent rapport with the Leicester public and has come to be looked upon as Mr Leicester City.

His annual charity run around both Filbert Street and now the Walkers Stadium has raised in excess of £500,000 for local deserving causes and in 2003 he was awarded an MBE for his charity work.

Alan is now Club Co-ordinator and acts as a liaison between the footballing and corporate departments of the organisation while continuing to fulfil his now legendary match-day activities.
